Freedom Labradors, based in New England, is always looking for innovative ways to interact with our community and so Chelsea Newcomb, the owner began a Comfort Dog Program to add onto her existing services, that has been a huge success in New England.

Two years ago, Chelsea asked if I would be interested in extending her program in the South. While being mentored, I searched (and continue to do so) for a location where I saw a need in addition to a place in which we can raise our family of 5. Currently, we have a temporary location and our search for the permanent location of Southern Comfort Working Dogs continues.

Unlike Service Dogs and Police K9’s, Comfort Dogs work to ease the trauma for individuals impacted by violence, tragedy, or traumatic events. Studies have shown that interacting with animals can have a positive impact on mental health.

We use our dogs to provide Emotional Support and Comfort in a variety of settings including Schools, Police and Fire Departments and Community Events. 

These programs have shown to be successful in areas such as mental health crisis, trauma, community policing, and in Schools calming anxieties to students and victims.

Comfort Dogs that are partnered with School Resource Officers provide emotional support for students and staff Schools during the weekdays, the community at night and weekends. It has been confirmed that Comfort Dogs have aided when
de-escalating stressful situations while providing unconditional love and support to people on some of their hardest days.

When at Police or Fire Departments, It’s been proven scientifically that talking about traumatic stress might alleviate mental health issues and our Comfort Dogs are there to assist our first responders when needed in addition to bringing a smile during their shift.

Whether it be students or our First responders, our Trained Comfort Dogs can be there to help decompress from whatever stress the day may bring by providing affection and comfort.

We work with the community to determine the best method in which to provide one of our Labradors and a Training Program that best suits their needs.

Chelsea, who has a Veterinary background, has mentored me for years and she has created a successful breeding program. Our dogs are bred for Health, Temperament, and Workability giving them a high success rate as Working Dogs in addition to great Companions.

All of our Breeding Dogs are fully Health Tested including a Full DNA panel to ensure that they are free of any genetic diseases that the breed can carry, OFA Hip and Elbow X-Rays.
